MUTCD Target Compliance Dates

The FHWA has established a series of Target Compliance Dates for new provisions in the 2009 MUTCD. The upcoming provisions we feel are most relevant to Hall Signs clients are listed below.

1/17/2011

Elimination of crosswalk lines from crossing signs and use of diagonal downward pointing arrow (W16-7P) supplemental plaque if at the crossing.

Use of W16-9P Ahead plaque or W16-2P or W16-2ap Distance plaques.

Removal of W8-3 Pavement Ends symbol sign.

1/22/2012

Implementation and continued use of an assessment or management method that is designed to maintain traffic sign retroreflecivity at or above the established minimum levels.

1/9/2012

6-inch letter height for lettering on post-mounted Street Name signs (except on multi-lane streets with speed limits greater than 40 mph)

12/22/2013

Signs mounted on the back of STOP or YIELD signs should not obscure shape of STOP sign, with the exception for DO NOT ENTER signs.

Removal of R3-9c and R3-9e Reversible Lane Control signs.

New W1-13 Truck Rollover warning sign.

New design of W2-6 Circular Intersection sign.

New design of W4-2 Lane Ends sign.

New W4-5 Entering Roadway Merge sign.

Elimination of W5-2 Narrow Bridge symbol sign.

New Vehicular Traffic Warning symbol signs W11-1, W11-5, W11-5a, W11-6, W11-11, W11-14.

New W16-10P PHOTO ENFORCED Plaque.

Width of stripes on Type III striped marker.

Replacement of regulatory, warning, and post-mounted guide (except street name) signs that are identified using the assessment or management method as failing to meet the established minimum levels.

1/22/2018

Replacement of street name signs and overhead guide signs that are identified using the assessment or management method as failling to meet the established minimum levels.

12/22/2018

Removal of R2-5 Series Reduced Speed Ahead signs and use of W3-5 or W3-5a warning signs (or S4-5 or S4-5a signs in School Zones) instead.

Retroreflective strip on R15-1 Grade Crossing (crossbuck) support.

8-inch letter height on post-mounted signs on multi-lane streets with speed limits greater than 40 mph and 12-inch letter height on overhead signs.

12/31/2019

New requirement in the 2009 MUTCD for the use of STOP or YIELD signs with Crossbuck signs at passive grade crossings.
