Know Your Retro: NEW MUTCD Sign Reflectivity Requirements
Traffic signs provide important information to drivers at all times, both day and night. To be effective, their visibility must be maintained.
| The second revision of the 2003 MUTCD introduces new language establishing minimum reflectivity levels that must be maintained for all traffic signs, including those on public property. | ![]() |
| This language also describes both assessment and management methods that agencies can use to maintain traffic sign retroreflectivity at or above the minimum levels. The FHWA believes that this proposed change will promote safety while providing sufficient flexibility for agencies to choose a maintenance method that best matches their specific conditions. | |
| Click here or on the images at left to download a copy of our Know Your Retro flyer, which contains pertinent information about the Minimum Reflectivity Ruling, as well as the materials needed for compliance. |
You can obtain additional information directly from the FHWA's website, or by downloading their information packet here.
